At least six people were killed and many others injured on Wednesday (July 1) in a fire at a 10-storey apartment block on August Vermeylenlaan in the Linkeroever district of Antwerp, Belgium.

The fire broke out mid-morning on the eighth floor. Antwerp police said the blaze was caused by a "technical fault on the ground floor." Some 200 residents were evacuated from the building. The 92-year-old former mayor of Antwerp, Bob, and his wife were rescued from a balcony.

Fire crews from multiple stations responded to the blaze. The force warned locals affected by the smoke to close windows and doors and to shut off ventilation systems. Victims' identities are still being confirmed. Authorities said the death toll is not expected to exceed five, as the entire building has been evacuated.
