A wildfire near the famous tourist destination Big Sur, California, has grown rapidly, forcing evacuations and closures of landmarks and parks.

According to Cal Fire's latest incident report as of midday Monday, Aug 10, the Timber Fire has scorched through 1,300 acres with just 5% containment. The fire is burning on the Big Sur side of the Santa Lucia Mountains, near Highway 1 around marker 32, north of Limekiln State Park and roughly 10 miles south of Big Sur, in steep rugged terrain of the Los Padres National Forest.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office called on visitors to stay out of the area to keep roadways clear for first responders. Evacuation orders were issued for zones MRY-F026, MRY-F027 (including the luxury Ventana Inn) and newly MRY-F028-A and MRY-F025. Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park are closed; the Henry Miller Library is also temporarily closed.

Highway 1 is partially closed, with motorists advised to use Highway 101 as an alternative. Hotels are offering evacuation rates for impacted residents and visitors.
