Firefighter killed, 2 more injured in Durham fire

A firefighter died, and two other firefighters were injured during a response to a fire early Thursday morning in Durham.

The Durham Fire Department responded to a fire at 410 Marly Drive just after 3:20 a.m., with crews seeing smoke and flames coming out of a multi-story commercial building, Durham Fire Chief Robert Zoldos said during a news conference.

Zoldos said that after 3:30 a.m., part of the building's roof collapsed as firefighters were standing on it, causing the second floor to also collapse on top of other firefighters who were inside. The firefighters who were on the first floor became trapped.

"As a result, one of the firefighters was killed in the line of duty while trying to save others, and two others were injured. The two injured were taken to Duke Medical Center for treatment and have been treated and released," Zoldos said.

In a Facebook post, the City of Durham identified the deceased firefighter as Andrew Brokes, 24, who joined the department in May 2025.

The people inside before the fire started had already gotten out safely.

The State Bureau of Investigation will be investigating the incident along with the Durham Fire Department's Fire Marshal's Office and the County of Durham Fire Marshal's Office.
